Healthcare risk management can be a harsh environment for new ideas and new thinking. We are dealing with layers of accrued conventions that often compensate for inefficient or outdated practices rather than tackle them head on.  But it is also a world rich with opportunity and ripe for new ways of thinking about the challenges facing healthcare professionals today.

In our 35 years’ experience serving the Stanford University Medical Network and health systems across the USA and UK, we’ve come to believe that traditional improvement tools must be supplemented with empathy-driven approaches from the creative fields of design.  By placing people at the forefront of efforts to solve complex, systemic problems, design approaches are uniquely effective in aligning diverse stakeholders and giving each of them—physicians, patients, or front-line staff —a voice.

And now, we believe it is time to codify what we have learned.

The result is Discovery Design – a handbook for healthcare professionals seeking to generate new ideas that address real needs, launch practical solutions that can be implemented in existing systems and workflows and monitor and continuously improve them. Discovery Design offers a human-centered approach to solving complex problems from the perspective of the people who are affected by them.

Grounded in theory but oriented toward practice, the goal of Discovery Design is to guide practitioners through the stages of the design problem-solving process, from embarking on a program of change to scaling the outcomes throughout an organization.
